There are a few changes to the financial help available to students from this academic year.
A summary of the changes for 2009 is as follows:
- The University of Exeter will be charging £3,225 for all its full-time undergraduate courses from 2009/10. (Please note: Existing 'home' full-time undergraduate students who enrolled on courses prior to 2006/07 will make a contribution of up to £1,285 toward their fees in 2009/10.)
- Increased rates for Tuition Fee Loans to cover Tuition Fees payable. Eligible full-time students can now apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of their Tuition Fee liability. No eligible student will have to pay tuition fees up front before starting their course, or while they are studying. In 2009/10, students can borrow up to £3,225 to cover the cost of their Tuition Fees. If students do not apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of their personal fee liability, the University will require payment in accordance with our normal payment deadlines. Repayment of the loan will only begin after they have left Higher Education and are earning above £15,000 per year.
- A non-repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906 a year for new full-time students from households with lower incomes.
- A non-repayable Special Support Grant of up to £2,906 a year for new full-time students who may be eligible to receive benefits such as Income Support or Housing Benefit during their studies.
- Increased Student Maintenance Loan rates to assist students to meet their basic living costs.
- University Bursaries for students subject to increased Undergraduate fees (Variable Fees). For students in receipt of the maximum Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant and are being charged the full tuition fee, Universities must provide bursary of at least £319. The University of Exeter is offering bursaries of up to £1,500 for students on the lowest household incomes. If you wish to be considered for a bursary from Exeter, you must give your consent to share details of your Local Authority Financial Assessement to the Student Loans Company. You will be asked to do this when completing your application for Financial Support (PN1/PR1). If you do not complete this statement, the University will not receive details of your assessed residual household income from your Local Education Authority, and will therefore be unable to confirm your bursary entitlement.
- An increased package of support for Part-time students. Part-time students on courses that are 50% or more of an equivalent full-time course can apply for support through their Local Education Authority. This includes a Fee Grant of up to £1,210 and a course grant of up to £260 towards travel, books and other course costs. Entitlement to these grants will depend on your income and the income of your family. Students, whose tuition fees exceed the maximum Fee Grant available, can apply for assistance from the Access to Learning Fund.
- For 2009/10, the Additional Fee Support Scheme has been extended to assist students who are in receipt of at least a partial Fee Grant. The amount of support available from this scheme will match the total amount of Fee Grant paid through the Local Authority, up to the level of fees charged for the course. All other criteria remains unchanged.
- National Insurance numbers and paying Student Loans. From 2009, all instalments for Student Loans for Tuition Fees and for Student Loans for Maintenance may be withheld if a National Insurance (NI) number is not provided. People who do not have National Insurance numbers may be asked to contact either HM Revenue & Customs or the Department for Work and Pensions to get one, and the SLC will not pay out loan instalments unless the student provides evidence that they are actively seeking a NI number.
