New Research Student here at Exeter?Doing a PhD is a tall order and a serious accomplishment. There are many things to do on the way and it is easy to get blinkered on that imposing research problem. We offer a special centralised induction session for new PhD students, which complements and builds upon school-based induction programmes. The session is entitled "Nuts and Bolts: How to get your PhD in a Day". This one-day workshop runs throughout the year and dates and times are advertised on the workshop booking site under "Research Management". The session covers PhD fundamentals, including: understanding better
the nature of a PhD, what it means to be a professional researcher,
exploring notions of originality, considering ways in which students
can plan and review their own development needs, managing the supervisory
relationship, networking with other like-minded individuals, and raising
awareness of where to go for further PhD support and guidance. They
will also hear from PhD students later on in the programme what the
first year is really like. Also, it is important as a new research student to browse the content on this site and see what else can help you get your doctorate. Get involved and get motivated!
