Disability
A government website which includes information on discrimination, task force, rights and training for disabled people.
Disability Now (UK)
Disability Now is a UK based newspaper for people with an interest in issues surrounding disabilities. The website contains news, features, subscription information and a searchable archive of past issues. The site also includes a large number of links relating to disability issues.
NISS: Special Needs Support
'There is increasing emphasis on the need to support students with special needs. These sites will provide more information for staff offering that support, as well as for the students themselves'.
SKILL: National Bureau for students with disabilities
Skill promotes opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of disability in post-16 education, training and employment across the UK.
Dyslexia
British Dyslexia Association
Dyslexia is the commonest disability amongst students. This site calls itself 'the voice of dyslexic people'. It includes some general awareness information, including self-testing, screening and advice about computers.
Hearing
Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID)
The RNID charity represents deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK and aims achieve a radically better quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing people.
Royal Association for the Deaf
Lots of information, including a quick quiz and a useful series of quick guides, one of which is a quick guide to sign language.
Mental Health
Guidance on Students Experiencing Mental Health Difficulties
The University's own document usefully combining policy and practice.
Mind
The leading mental health charity in England and Wales.
The Mental Health Foundation
The Mental Health Foundation is the leading UK charity working in mental health and learning disabilities.
Mobility
Scope
Scope is a disability organisation in England and Wales whose focus is people with cerebral palsy. Download factsheets and access publications on a wide range of issues concerning cerebral palsy, disability and Scope.
Multiple Sclerosis Society
The MS Society is the UK's largest charity for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) - about 85,000 people in the UK.
Sight
Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB)
An enormous amount of factual and reference information. Its Frequently Asked Questions section is particularly impressive.
Speech
Speech, language and communication difficulties (pdf document)
A booklet, published by the British Brain and Spine Foundation (BBSF) in 1999, that aims to provide "an understanding of speech, language and communication and why these abilities can go wrong.
The British Stammering Association
A UK charity with a supporting, campaigning and educational purpose to help those affected, and to encourage research and education related to stammering.
