New Research Student here at Exeter this year?Doing a PhD is a tall order and a serious accomplishment. There are many things to do on the way and it is easy to get blinkered on that imposing research problem. We offer a special centralised induction session for new PhD students, which complements and builds upon school-based induction programmes. The session is entitled "Nuts and Bolts: How to get your PhD in a Day". This one-day workshop runs throughout the year and dates and times are advertised on the workshop booking site under "For New Research Students". We also regularly update schools of forthcoming events. The workshop covers practical issues relating to the thesis, such as notions of 'originality', how to start and continue writing and, how to manage that critical supervisory relationship over the life-span of your research project. The session will also cover how to plan your skills training and development needs. ‘Nuts and Bolts’ will cover the fundamentals of a PhD that all new research students need to be aware of. So, make sure that your PhD toolbox is well stocked from day one, and come along to this session. Also, it is important as a new research student to browse the content on this site and see what else can help you get your doctorate. Get involved and get motivated!
